Manufacturing Engineering deals with product and
process design. It requires the ability to plan
the practices of manufacturing; to research and
develop tools, manufacturing processes, machines
and equipment, control strategies; and to
integrate the facilities and systems so that
quality products can be produced at a competitive
cost. Industry has a pressing need for
academically qualified manufacturing engineers due
to the fact that today's products and the
technology to manufacture them have become
increasingly more sophisticated. Examples of new
manufacturing technologies being applied to
increase productivity, improve quality and reduce
costs include computer-aided design, robotics,
statistical process control, and
computer-integrated manufacturing systems.
